Good radio for those of us who love the old school

I listen to the radio quite a bit while doing other things. I could often listen to the same thing on the internet, but it hurts my "keep it simple" feelings. I think it's really stupid to bundle a lot of technology to give me something that's already up in the air and easily accepted by simple devices. Now to the radio itself. Headphone radios are easy to find, but most currently available are a combination hearing protector and radio. I also have one of these when I'm doing noisy tasks, but more often than not I prefer something lighter that doesn't block outside noise. This walkie talkie stays on the head well due to the strap that goes around the back of the head and the pressure of the phones on the ears. The pressure sometimes becomes uncomfortable after an hour. Sound quality on FM is good but certainly not up to the high quality standards I was expecting. FM signal sensitivity is OK, but not as good as an earplug radio used as an external whip antenna. The weak point of the radio is working in the AM band. This is way worse than the old Radio Shack headphone radio I have (now broke). There are three main problems: 1. The sound level on the AM band is much lower than on the FM band. I can compensate by cranking up the volume, but such large adjustments aren't necessary. 2. The AM signal sensitivity is much worse than my old Radio Shack headphone radio. 3. The sound quality is terrible. All three problems stem from design choices made in China that likely save 25 cents in material costs. This is probably due to Chinese culture, where "best price" is valued higher than "best value for money". Unfortunately, Radio Shack just took the product as is, rather than claiming a significant improvement in AM performance for a small increase in cost.
