Must be plugged into an external outlet to keep the battery charged. Works well and was very easy to install. My camera is high under the ceiling and I had to constantly change the battery using a ladder due to its high activity. Now the battery is always charged. I plugged it into an outside outlet, but even if someone unplugged it, the battery would be well charged, so for security reasons, if a thief tries to unplug the power adapter, it doesn't matter, you'll still have power for days on a fully charged battery !
