I have a modern Sigma 100-400 attached to a Nikon D7100. I switched from a Nikkor 55-300 which is a great lens. Photo zooming and cropping isn't as sharp, however, due to the smaller 300mm range. (I always seem to want photos of birds and animals that are out of range of the lens!) This Sigma is sharp and works great on both cloudy and sunny days! Focusing is quick and responsive to the movement of birds between the trees and the pond where I tested the lens. The extra range means I don't have to crop and scale as much, but when I do the clarity is still good, better than 300mm. I wanted a 150-600 lens but the weight is prohibitive for me. higher price. The 100-400 is a great compromise between the 55-300 and 150-600 lenses in terms of weight and price. I use a shoulder strap instead of a neck strap and find the weight of this lens easy to carry when walking around the local ponds. I don't think I'll get far with a collar. I got the lens, USB dock and accessories from Amazon for $610. I am very happy with this purchase and would definitely recommend this lens. I did not try to use a USB dock as the lens works very well. I might try this option sometime when I have more time to play. But right now I'm creating photos that I want to have as they are. Why bother with it. Overall I am happy with this purchase and look forward to years of use!
