This device extracts audio from HDMI but there are some limitations you need to be aware of. Front panel that allows you to choose one of three modes: Pass, 2.0, 5.1. Setting the device to 2.0 mode will also result in the HDMI and S/PDIF audio being output as 2 channels, even if the source material is in 5.1, 7.1 or other surround format. So you can't run a surround signal through the device AND still have a working analogue output. To make this a little clearer, any audio entering the device is sent to all compatible outputs, and all outputs are from the same source. However, since the analog outputs cannot carry surround sound, the analog outputs will be disabled when the device is receiving multi-channel audio. The switch doesn't really affect the internal functionality; It's just a way of telling the source video device what audio formats are supported, and thus influencing what audio format is sent to the device.
