Overpriced, Overrated Version of Vitamin C with Bioflavonoids

This product contains 2 tablets per serving: Vitamin C 1000mg L-Lysine 100mg Quercetin 15mg Other. There are three typical forms of vitamin C on the market: Ascorbic acid. It is available in natural or synthetic form. This product doesn't state what it offers, but it really doesn't matter. Studies have shown that both natural and synthetic forms are chemically identical and there is no difference in their bioavailability. High doses of either form can irritate the stomach in sensitive individuals. Buffered Vitamin C. These are the mineral salts of ascorbic acid, the most popular form of which is calcium ascorbate. It is less acidic than pure ascorbic acid and therefore causes less stomach upset. This product is definitely not buffered vitamin C. Vitamin C with Bioflavonoids: Bioflavonoids are plant compounds found in fruits and vegetables, especially citrus fruits, that are powerful antioxidants. Some studies have shown that bioflavonoids can increase the bioavailability of ascorbic acid. The most important bioflavonoids are: diosmin, hesperidin, rutin, naringin, tangeretin, diosmetin, narirutin, neohesperidin, nobiletin and quercetin. This product's label states that it contains citrus bioflavonoids, which seems to be the main reason it is considered more bioavailable than pure ascorbic acid. However, the label does not state which citrus bioflavonoids it contains other than quercetin. Maybe because he's the only one. If yes, why not tell? Note that for quercetin, doses of 50-150 mg per day were typically used in studies of this supplement. Therefore, 15 mg is a rather small and ineffective dose. L-lysine is an amino acid, so it should ideally be taken on an empty stomach or at least with a protein-free meal. His main claim to fame lies in treating herpes. It has also been found to help relieve the pain of shingles. In studies, it is commonly taken in dosages of 1000-1248 mg per day. Hence, the dose in this supplement is quite low. Considering that the label directions state that this supplement is to be taken with food as it will help prevent possible stomach ache from vitamin C combined with the fact that most people eat varying amounts of protein at mealtimes I have come to the conclusion that the L-lysine in this supplement will be completely useless to those who consume it. Bottom Line: This supplement is essentially an overrated, overrated version of vitamin C with bioflavonoids.
