Yes it's weird to put together but not hard. Yes it's only a plastic piece over the top but you are getting what you pay for. We secured it better with office clips. It's holding up well.It will get wet, obviously, if it's on the ground. We have it on a tupperware that's slanted to keep water from puddling underneath, and used cords to make the sides longer so we could put it in the ground.We've started putting treats/food in it for the feral cats and they are taking them. They haven't slept in them yet.I do suggest this for an inexpensive product to help with feral cats.
