as long as you buy RAM with the right specs, a Mid- 2010 Mac Mini Servers with a maximum specification of 8GB support 16GB (or a couple of those 8GB sticks). I wasn't willing to pay for a few when my intuition was that 4GB to 10GB would be a good jump in size to play around with Xcode development. Worst case, if my computer exceeds 8GB, I'll only have an 8GB flash drive, which is technically Apple's maximum certification on that computer. I thought it was a calculated risk. I'm also aware that mismatched memory pairs are not recommended by IT admins, and to be honest my 2007 MacBook has never complained in 13 years about it being 1+2=3GB. I had no reason to think this Mac would complain and after a month it's working fine and under light loads macOS uses the extra RAM to cache the files it's looking for. I was right about the 10GB, the real bottleneck in this mini isn't the RAM, it's the Core2Duo, which is often slammed. However, the machine suffered badly from the default 4GB esp if you update to the patched version of Catalina (10.15.4). Bottom line, I won't invest in a second 8GB stick - I don't think 16GB will make a difference in a CPU bottleneck. Switch back to High Sierra with 10GB and it works much better. Take a trip down memory lane to Mountain Lion Server 10.8 and the machine is very fast (especially if you upgrade at least one of the two hard drives to an SSD). I'm running 2 instances of Emby and AltServer and planning to install Apache and maybe a few others.) Now I wouldn't recommend an upgrade (for a mid-2010 Mac Mini) for Xcode development - it's a toy at best. This was supposed to be a temporary measure until I could get my hands on a new Mac with Apple Silicon and I had a 2018 iPad Pro that has kept me going for the last 3 months which has been great. Now if you could get an 8GB flash drive for $25 (or two for $40!) that would be a great deal!
