There is a layer of silicone in the lid that can be removed and cleaned. It stops leaks and seals it. Excellent purchase. All glasses are intact, nothing is broken. I washed it in the dishwasher first to remove any residue. So far I have used it with my juices. I put them in the freezer overnight and the only time they leaked was when I filled them to the brim and left them in the freezer. Don't forget that liquids expand when they freeze! So don't fill it all the way up if you plan on putting them in the freezer.
