Review on AKG K72 Pro Audio Studio Headphones in Matte Black – Over-Ear, Closed-Back Design for Superior Sound by Doug Virden

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Good value for money

I listen to old AKG 601s at home every day and mostly like them because they sound comfortable and neutral, I can wear them for a long time. They sound exactly like the more popular 701s. I have a fairly large head so the AKG headband design suits me better than the 'regular' headbands which feel too small. I'm used to the "polite" AKG bass response, but never liked it. Looking for a closed equivalent for a noisier work environment, I wanted the comfort of an AKG headband with acceptable sound quality at a much lower price point, so the K92 fits the bill. The main surprises of these phones are: 1. While the design is similar, it's not the same - the cups are a little smaller, the pads are a little thinner, and the headband is a little more springy, so not quite a comfort vent like the 601 design. Still, it is still comfortable, with the same ease that I love about the 601.2. The sound is very different: much higher sensitivity, *much* more bass, which I find more realistic. This is not AKG's analytical sound at all. Compared to my 601s they are also quite harsh in the mid/high range of the vocals like Norah Jones sounding like a different person like she's screaming.3. Less isolation than I had hoped. I suppose that's a compromise with ease. It's better than open-back headphones, but not a complete solution. Most of the time, high frequencies are blocked, but low frequencies, including speech, are not attenuated as much.
