Know your expectations before you buy. This camera isn't designed to carry the 3-4 pound lens that others have complained about on this camera. It is not intended to replace your high quality full frame camera. It is not advertised as a professional wildlife and sports camera. But then again, it costs 1/3 to 1/4 the cost of high-end cameras, we can't expect it to perform the same. This is from the Rebel series, designed for ease of use, excellent image quality and light weight. Portability. If you're buying this camera for the right reasons, you won't be disappointed. I have a Canon full frame camera with a heavy lens. Due to the size/weight I sometimes leave it at home and dream of something smaller to capture the moment. I started spotting and shooting, and a high-end P&S cost as much as an SL1, if not more. And the SL1 is more efficient than any other P&S. It's slightly larger than P&S, but not enough to deter you from buying or using it. Love all the auto settings and scenes. I don't normally shoot with automatic settings, but I find this Rebel "knows its stuff" and does a pretty good job of choosing the right settings for what you're trying to capture. It also offers a lot of manual settings, allowing you to choose sharpness, saturation, contrast, max ISO, flash, etc. All the controls you need. And it produces damn good images whether you're using automatic or manual mode. Regarding this lens, the new STM lenses that are now included with Rebels are a good choice. The purchase price is so low that you can't get past it. I received the 18-55 and 55-250 STM lenses with the camera and was very happy with the price of this "kit" and how well it performs. If you want to use a Canon 100-400mm lens, get a camera that supports it. If you want lightness, ease and great results, then this is what you need.
