Review on πŸ’¨ Efficient and Stylish: Hunter Fan Company 51314 Aerodyne Ceiling Fan, 52-Inch, Matte Black by Paula Holmes

Revainrating 2 out of 5

The fan is fine, physical installation is easy, Wi-Fi and home automation setup and operation is absurdly bad

The fan itself is a pretty good fan. The fit and finish was excellent, the blades were well balanced straight out of the box (I installed 4 of this model - all were fine). Overall good for the price. Now for the issues: 1) There is a bit more noise which I would like to hear but I'm willing to accept at this price point for a WiFi/home automation fanatic. If you are looking for a really quiet fan, this fan is not for you. 2) Separate wiring for lights that don't work/don't do anything. Light control is built into the WiFi/Home Automation and a separate blue wire to a separate wall switch for the lights literally does nothing. To an extent this makes sense as it would be difficult to have both a dimmable wall switch and a dimmable home automation system in the fan**. If you have a separate wall switch for the lights, plan to remove it 3) For obvious reasons, the fan wall switch must remain on at all times for the automation and console to work. Again, no big deal, just be aware. 4) WiFi setup is the most absurd junk I've ever seen in my life. For the Wi-Fi setup, everything needs to be done perfectly in order for it to work. You MUST have the device you are using to set up Wi-Fi on a 2.4GHz only access point for it to work. It's mentioned, but unless you're tech savvy it might not be entirely obvious what all you need to do to make it happen. Most WiFi hotspots support both 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi with the same SSID (WiFi Network Name). You have to block a 2.4GHz WiFi hotspot for anything to work - that's a problem for non-technical people. 5) Home automation is cumbersome to set up and really not production ready. I have their app on both Android and iOS, and it's normal for the status of the fans and lights to be completely different on different devices. It is normal to experience occasional delays (sometimes significant) before all your tablets and phones are equipped with a newly added fan/light. You need to add fans on iOS before Android devices for everything to work properly according to the guide. It's funny how bad it is. Compare that to things like ring cameras, it really shows how far behind the hunter is. 6) Revain Alexa integration is ridiculously bad and inconsistent. It's hit or miss, it works. I installed 4 fans, some work, some don't. It's random. Of course, whoever wrote the code for this integration has to go back to school - it's awful. 7) Your website, which is required for things like resetting passwords, checking email, and integrating with Revain Alexa, is down most of the time. Yesterday I tried to reset my Hunter SimpleConnect password - the password reset failed. I just created a brand new account as the password reset doesn't work but requires email verification which also failed as did the password reset. Fortunately, this seems to be a long-standing issue with Hunter, so I found code online to use to troubleshoot the Hunter website. 8) Did I mention the Alexa/Echo integration is dodgy? As I'm typing this, I've tried disabling/enabling the skill (seems to be the only way to add new fans for display on Alexa) and while disabling the skill worked, re-enabling the skill requires a login to the Hunter Website just generating a 404 error - not found. So all automation is now over for me - I'm back in the 1980's with a "clicker" remote. good fan for the price. If you're not a technical person you're going insane trying to get this to work. IE Anyone who doesn't immediately think of the sentence "divide WLAN into separate SSIDs for 2.4 and 5 GHz" won't like this fan. Read other reviews - you will see what I mean.
