Bought this unit for our planned Rim 2 Rim Grand Canyon hike. Two groups of us were setting out from both Romes and staying at Ghost Ranch when one of the group's leaders asked each member of the group to arm themselves with a walkie-talkie to undertake this long arduous hike. We used the device in frequency mode and tuned the radio to the same channel frequency as everyone else in the group during the hike, loud and clear even when we were far away. The battery life is also impressive. As one of the leaders of the group, I have to keep the radio on at all times and communicate frequently with all team members. The battery kept me going for most of the 20 hour hike. Is there anything to consider? When using in frequency mode, be careful not to accidentally change the frequency setting, otherwise you will not be able to communicate with other people - you are not on the same channel as them. In a word, an excellent device for outdoor recreation. Let me put it this way, you can speak to your South Rim support team from Plateau Point or Indian Garden. Like one unit!
