Revainrating 4 out of 5

Handy and handy

I ordered this because I'm too cheap to buy a portable charger for my digital camera and I needed a way to charge the battery after a day of shooting while I drive to the next location. With that, I didn't use it in its default configuration. First, I disassembled the case and removed the connector. I found a spot on the car that I liked, cut a hole the size of a plug, and put the plug in there. Then I routed cables to install the inverter unit at a remote location. I also removed the main power supply and plugged it directly into my fuse box. I lowered my overall rating for two reasons. Firstly, it is an inverter that consumes a lot of energy from the car. It has nice thick wires for the accessory connector plug, unfortunately modern cars don't have the same thick wire for the connector. Most of them use 22-24 gauge wire which can easily overheat when using such a device and I haven't found any warnings about this issue. The second issue I had was that the wire going to the 110 volt outlet was 24 gauge stranded wire. I agree with one or the other, but again a combination of both can lead to overheating issues. I've found that people see an outlet and don't think of the power consumption of the device they plug into it, an outlet is an outlet right?! The case lists its limitations, but none of the papers provide examples, and unless you work with electricity on a regular basis you don't know what those numbers mean or how to convert them into useful information.
