There were 2 size options when purchased, one for handkerchiefs and one for hand towels. I sized the towels and am able to hang a standard sized towel on the top bar with the ends hanging about 1 inch from the base. No need to get creative with the extra folding. Ideal! The towel is allowed to dry properly between uses and stays clean on the countertop/sink. The marble base is heavy enough to use the towel without removing it from the holder. Came with self-adhesive foam circles for the bottom of the base. 100% satisfied. A standard size towel folded in half only will be wider than the top bar. It doesn't bother me at all. If that bothers you, you can fold the towel lengthwise so that the towel fits nicely between the ends on the top bar.
