After I got them After unpacking and reading the instructions, I assembled it myself (I'm not a mechanic) and went outside. I placed this pump on my winter cover on an above ground pool. It was full of water and leaves. I carefully placed the drain pipe where the sewage should drain and flipped the switch. The cord and hose were a very good length. I used a skimmer to pull out the leaves and just watched the leaves as I picked them up. Ali at the bottom. I left about an inch of water to hold the lid. at our local pool shop that water will be sucked out of your pool through the tarpaulin/winter cover if the pump is left on for too long. While I don't think it's a problem, I didn't think so. This is a great pump and comes with a few extra parts should you wish to use a garden hose instead of the one supplied. It was thoughtful.
