Review on Edelbrock 8856 WATER PUMP by Jeremy Choi

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Quality water pump in water pump catalog

A bit pricey but this water pump looks like a quality piece of equipment and works well. As with almost all Pontiac engine water pumps of the era, you must use a hammer to minimize the gap between the included spacer plate and the impeller for maximum pumping efficiency. There is a significant gap from the factory, but this can easily and quickly be minimized by shaping the spacer plate with a hammer. The rest of the installation was easy. In my case, I replaced many other parts of the cooling system, so I cannot speak about cooling improvements that are a direct result of just installing this water pump. My '66 GTO runs colder, but that could also be because I installed a fan shroud alongside the new water pump, swapped out the fan clutch, and swapped out the thermostat. All in all, this is a good water pump that I can recommend. It's also significantly lighter than traditional cast iron water pumps, which is another plus.

Pros
  • Engine cooling and climate control
Cons
  • Obsolete model
