I was looking for auto-retractable reels and an extender for them, but the cost of these units and the fact that I already had a great, quality cable put me off buying them. Then I found this! I can use my existing extension cords, I don't have to worry about someone retracting the drum uncontrollably (which can damage auto-retracting drums and their hard-to-replace cords) and if the cord gets damaged or if I need longer, that's it very easy to replace! Despite the fact that the device is plastic, it doesn't feel like it's going to fall apart and should last for many years. It would easily survive in a humid environment, but if used as an electrical cord I wouldn't recommend it. The basket can easily accommodate a 100-foot heavy-duty cable or a 150-foot standard cable with a little extra room. My only complaint is that the little plastic S hook they give to attach the end of the cord to the bottom of the basket doesn't hold up very well. The zipper perfectly solves this problem. I also recommend using tie down straps to secure the free end of the cord between the basket and the outlet. This helps keep it out of the way and ensures you don't accidentally pull it out when you empty the basket by pulling the cord.
