Use your common sense to ensure the lid slides forward to balance the weight. Someone said it was cheap plastic: No, it's actually a lightweight, durable plastic, so it doesn't weigh a ton on your lap and packs easily. I bought too many knee braces that didn't work. I am pleased. Believe me, the designer was looking for the same features.
