They work well. Our 5 year old can use them effectively. The sound is clear and loud. I didn't use the VOX option but it only seems to pick up the voice when the PTT button is held down. We did not test the "range of 3 miles". I'm not exactly sure it will come to that in many scenarios, but I really have no reason to think it won't. We have 2 acres with lots of trees and they take care of the entire yard even if there is a house and trees between us. They seem cheap but survived our daughter rescuing a friend, using them, dropping and throwing them. I recommend them to anyone who needs an inexpensive walkie-talkie to play or communicate with a child on the street.
