Revainrating 5 out of 5

TOTL Endgame but depends on the source! Like Teal, I'm out!

I'm semi-retired but on the road again and fly weekly all the time. I've been buying quality headphones between $500 and $2800 for years. Offer. I spend hours reading reviews, analyzing cables and daps. I only use most things briefly, sell them at a loss and look for the next great sound. For me it's important to be on the road 80% of the time to be able to listen to music at home when I'm on the go because when I travel it's my life. So as I know I have Sennheiser, Oppo, Focal, Sony, Audeze, Grado and Mr. Speaker just to name a few. It is important that you understand why my rating is as it is. There are many variables that affect sound, file quality, cable, DAC/amp and actual headphones. When we look at HP's ratings, we need to carefully examine these variables, as well as listener preferences, to determine how well the rating applies to you. In my case, I love jazz, classical, singer-songwriters, and film and Broadway soundtracks. Over the years, the Sennheiser H800 have been the most interesting headphones I've ever owned. The soundstage, details, woods, sound expansion, airiness are all aspects I have not experienced in any other headphone. I kept coming back to the HD800 as a reference sound to test the tone of the voice, the depth of the strings, the quality of the oboe or flute, the touch of the piano keys. The highs could sizzle a bit and the bass could get a bit dry, but it sparkled. I sold them because they were open, I was rarely home and rarely heard them. Recently back on the road and after purchasing the highest quality DAP/AMP I've ever owned, the Cayin N8, I started looking for a good closed tone again. Sony WMZ 1000v3, Focal Elegia, Mr Speakers C, AKG N90, Sony 1ZR, I was looking at the new Focal Stellia. I found out about the Sennheiser HD820 without even knowing they were released. From the moment I put them on I got back the reference level I remember. Depth, brilliance, range, woodiness by taking a semi-sibilant contralto and giving it breadth, neutrality and hiss disappeared. I know I didn't want Sens because of the 300 ohm and amp dependency but I have to say they sing like no other. I had them on them for about 2 weeks, about 50 hours. I bought a Moon Audio Black Dragon Premium balanced cable to replace the long standard cable for a shorter travel length, stronger connectors and better sound. I bought the Accessory House Global 2XL travel case. Worn them 8 flights. They're noise isolating and frankly good enough for enjoying music. I'm not really a fan of "electronic" headphones. I had a feeling that when I officially retire, these Sennheiser HD820s and my Sony Z1R will be my endgame headphones. I've tried everything but the electrostatics and they give me amazing Sony reference sound and warmth. After the purchase I still follow the reviews and keep reading that Sennheiser has high treble, tops and Sony is warmer and maybe something like Focal Stella and Meize Empyrean in the mids, no hiss, no bass but the best, what is there. This morning I'm thinking about how different what I hear can be. How can I think that HD820 are the best all rounders for me. Any HP is a compromise somewhere, but I think the HD 820s are the most entertaining and ideal. So I made a comparison between HD820s with a balanced Cayin N8 and my Sony NW zx300. In the quiet of my house, I listened to the high-resolution DreamBoat Annie file, one of my favorites for its dynamics, brilliance, bass, mids, treble and soundstage. On the Sony ZX300, the highs sounded thin, a little hissing even, the whole sound was missing the endgame sound I was hearing. I went to Cayin N8, Ahh. Sennheiser HD820 I am completely satisfied, wearing comfort, processing quality and sound, what more could you ask for. So I know there are others out there who buy quality headphones and are looking for great sound. Sound is subjective, but I learned a lot from other reviewers to get an idea. They are ashamed of some reviews that put a product on a pedestal while others say the same product is mediocre. I know this is a long review, without measurements and spectrum comparisons. But I hope this helps others. No earphone can do all that. But I'm confident that Sennheiser is bringing you everything anyone has ever wanted in your private listening space, and if you're stuck on an island or give up on any future HD820 purchases, you'll enjoy them, you'll hear the details of theirs Existence you didn't even know, put yourself in another world and enjoy the music considering all variables. With N8 and quality files, no annoying highs, lots of bass and everything right in the middle. This may be my last HP review, thanks to Amazon for allowing others in the community to share and help them enjoy the music, chip out! Enjoy the world! God bless you on your journey!)
