. Radio works perfectly. A few points that are a bit annoying: if you are in scan mode and lock the keyboard, the scan will stop and you will not be able to turn the scan function back on. The programming cable that came with the radio only works if I put a rubber band around the radio to hold it in place, although that seems to get better, maybe something at the connector. The microphone and headphone jack work perfectly. When programming a radio using CHIRP, you must use a BF-F8HP radio if you wish to include a medium power setting in the program. Medium is not available in the UV-5R settings. The manual that came with the radio is very small and difficult to read, so I downloaded the BF-F8HP manual from Boafengtech website. It's essentially the same radio and the manual is easier to read. I'm waiting for the test session to get my license back. I phased it out in 1998. I gave it to a friend and he turned on the repeater that was probably 30 miles from his house. We were on his deck which was probably 20 feet or so. I have a repeater for 5 and 8 watts. I currently have a Nagoya NA-771, so reception could be a bit better. Something to watch out for; The radio is very unstable in the vertical position, a ladybug flying at high speed can knock it over, especially with a long antenna. Overall I'm happy with what I got. As soon as I get my license back I will work hard on it. I will also be running my FT-101ZD HF and going back to HF.
