I broke my left distal collarbone in a car accident a little over a month ago. As a result, I've had to wear the bandage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, even while sleeping, for a month now, and I'll probably have to wear it for a few more weeks. At the hospital they gave me a cheap blue bandage and said I'd probably want to buy something nicer. A cheap little strap that immediately drove my right shoulder crazy so I bought an Ace branded sling from the pharmacy to try and find something better. It was at least better than the sick one, but I still had a large muscle strain in my shoulder from the weight of the belt on my right shoulder, made worse by the fact that it didn't fit me very well. (the belt is thrown around my neck, etc.) as I am a rather petite woman. It was also very difficult to adjust - they said it was designed for either hand, but wearing it on the left hand meant the sliding buckle for changing the length of the belt was behind my back so I had to ask for help each time time it took me to tighten the belt. I finally gave in and ordered it after a week or two and I'm SO HAPPY I did. The price would have been worth it even if I only had to wear it for a short time. Comfort: - The Joslin sling is stretchy and MUCH more comfortable than cheaper slings like I've seen in pharmacies. - I have a lot less trouble getting the trapezius tension right with this sling I think because it's elastic and because the sling fits better than the one I had with my first sling. - Stretchy material is generally more comfortable too - the strap isn't itchy, the strap sits on my shoulder rather than chafing or pressing on my neck, wraps my arm comfortably with no pressure points, it's soft without the big annoying plastic buckles found on some straps etc - It also has thumb loops to keep it in place when you need them. This can be handy for stabilizing everything when I'm moving a lot, and can be even more valuable if you've had an injury with a cast or something. Possible downside: the strap isn't very wide, which can contribute to shoulder discomfort in some cases. However, with my other webbing with a wider strap, the strap rubbed and pinched against my neck due to the width, so this strap was actually more comfortable for me even though it was quite narrow. small for her, and I understood how it was possible, but for me as a female (5'3.5", 145 lbs) it's perfect. - the happy medium I needed. (If you're a 6ft tall man you probably want to buy one of the larger Joslin sizes) The velcro is amazing The strap is MUCH longer than mine This is really necessary but the velcro is reversible so I just fold the strap twice to get the extra The velcro tab at the end of the strap attaches to the strap material which means you can absolutely make the strap as short as you like or let it go all the way - It's also very easy for me to do it with my right hand Adjust by hand - much easier than pushing to get things tightened by the straps This greatly simplifies tedious things like putting on and taking off a coat in winter (if you've ever had to dress with a broken collarbone n, you probably know what I mean). Care and cleaning: - Can be machine washed and dried. which you can't say about many slings from other brands and it's necessary because what you wear 24/7 for weeks ends up getting dirty and smelly. - (The fact that this one is black is definitely welcome. The first sling I bought was mostly white and after a week or two 24/7 it looked pretty gross even though I didn't do anything special (to get it dirty! when I go to work when I'm uncomfortable wearing this sling with nice clothes.) If you're going to be stuck in a sling for more than a week or two I'm absolutely sure the extra price of this sling is worth it . The stretchy material, amazing Velcro closure and washability are priceless. However, as said, be careful with the sizing - small adults will love this sling, while taller and/or taller people will likely prefer one of the larger Joslin sizes.
