My 5 year old wears size 5/6 trousers so I ordered a size 7. They're a little roomy at the waist and a little long, but they have a functional drawstring waist that gives you enough room to grow into it. He goes to a private school in PNW where they are outside rain or sun, cold or heat. We liked them so much I ordered another pair, one for home and one for school.
