Great as a hot air station, terrible as a soldering station

I wasn't sure what to expect after spending less than $100 on a hot air and soldering station combo. I thought the soldering iron was actually pretty decent and the hot air station mediocre at best, but I was wrong on both counts. To my surprise, the hot air station works incredibly well! It heats up quickly, the cooling function works great and the adjustable air speed gives great flexibility. I haven't used all the hints but with a few sizes I find they will work in most situations. In my case, removing and installing a new package with the replacement of the SMD DrMOS package was as easy as peeling a pear! A soldering iron, on the other hand, is a pile of junk. Mine might just be bad, but it doesn't matter if I heat this thing to a full 480C, the tip barely gets hot enough to melt solder on any size base plate, even after heating the iron for a few minutes. high. Without heating the board with a hot air station, the soldering iron for soldering through capacitors would not have worked in my project at all. My $50 10 year old Weller soldering iron with butane works much better, it just isn't good for circuit board work. -1 star. I knew the included accessories would be pretty cheap before I bought it, but figured I'd give the solder wick a try anyway. Bad idea. The moment the wick touched the flux I had on the board, tiny flakes of what I can only assume to be copper began flowing through the flux. It seriously looked like I had rust all over my circuit board. I also tried a solder suction cup which worked for the first few through hole pads but quickly stopped working after those first few. I had to trade it in for my trusty suction cup that I've had for years. -1 star. Overall I'd say this station is pretty good value for a hot air station only. The temperature controls, temperature gauge, auto cooling, variable airflow and overall very functional design were a delight and I would buy it again for that alone. However, the soldering iron and included accessories really do this station a disservice and detract from the value this station has to offer.

Pros
  • Anti-Static / ESD Safe Design - Can help prevent damage to components from static electricity or leakage.
Cons
  • Very expensive
