This headlamp offers fantastic value for money. I've bought flashlights under $200 from other brands like Fenix, Streamlight, ThruNite, Klarus, Jetbeam, Convoy, etc. It's been something of a hobby for me over the years and I've spent quite a bit on flashlights. However, I have never bought a headlamp. It just never felt like the best value for money, like I could get more bang for my buck in a comparably priced flashlight. However, since I'm potty training a new puppy and find myself picking him up and chasing him at all hours of the night, I thought it would be a good idea to try the hands-free option. Of course, my initial desire was to do a lot of research, find out which one is better, and get it. I looked at the top brands, especially Petzl and Black Diamond. I looked at the water resistance, battery options (AAA and rechargeable), brightness, battery life, build quality, comfort, and features. In the end, I decided that a headlamp that would fit me would cost me at least $60. I put two of these in my shopping cart and was about to check out when I decided to search "rechargeable headlamp" just to see what budget options were available. I found that there were several ways to purchase a pair of rechargeable headlamps for as little as $20 or $10 each. Not only that, they had decent reviews. A battery is a must in a daily (not emergency) flashlight. Since most headlamps use AAA batteries and I only use Energizer Ultimate lithium batteries in my flashlights, each charge saves me about $4. If I charge this headlamp twice a week for a year, I'll save $400 on batteries. If this lasts 2 years (and I'm pretty sure it will) it will save me $800 (alkaline batteries can explode in flashlights and ruin them. Last year I lost about $200 on flashlights when Duracell -Used batteries which I've always trusted Lithium batteries don't explode and have a 20 year shelf life However it has become my most used flashlight around the house I often run around with it in the middle of the day because it's so helpful The headlights are great. Because when the light is that close to your eyes, shadows aren't really a problem. This lamp has high/low spot, high/low bay, red bay and red flash options. I've found that I've only used the High Spot outside for walking the dog and the High Flow only indoors for working in a garage/car/storage room or anywhere else the lighting is far from optimal. The spot is bright enough to light up the entire side of my house from 50 feet away and the base is perfect for giving the impression that the light is burning high in every corner of the house you work in. great to read! My wife has been using clip-on book lights even during the day lately due to eye fatigue from reading indoors. (We're not old people. She's 25 and I'm 29.) But this flashlight's output is so much brighter and more natural that I think it will completely replace a reading lamp. good combination of spot spill. The blending mode is soft around the edges and looks very natural with no artifacts. The red flood mode has a lot of artifacts and looks very sloppy. If you plan to use a red light for night vision, this headlamp may not be the right choice for you. However, I don't plan on ever using this mode, so I won't be holding it up to a headlamp. Finally, the flashing red mode is also pretty much useless for my purposes, but would be awesome if you were riding a bike or walking down the street at night. The strap is very comfortable and does not cause headaches. The part of the lamp that touches your forehead has a very soft foam that makes it easy to wear the lamp for a long time without pain. I don't use the proximity sensor/hands-free mode because when I wave my hand in front of the light to turn it on, the light hits my hand right in front of my eyes for a moment and it's very bright and uncomfortable. Herver, for those who are thinking about buying this headlamp, I will briefly describe the operation. There are two buttons on the top of the lamp. The button on the right toggles Spot High, Spot Low, High Bay, Bay False, Red Flush, Red Flash, Off. The left button (with an image of a hand) toggles between spot high, flood high, and off. However, in each of these two modes, which are activated by pressing the hand button, the light can be switched on and off by hand movements in front of the headlight. I think that's because if you were wearing gloves or something that made you unable to push the buttons, you could still turn the light on and off. All in all a great headlamp for my purposes and great value for money. If you are not an absolute fan of flashlights or have specific and specialized needs, this headlamp is for anyone who needs hands-free light. (And if you haven't tried a headlamp before, I highly recommend you do so. Both hands are free to work on it, and having the perfect lighting for whatever you're working on has been revolutionary for me. I would have minded one should add one year.)
