Good lens, disappointing packaging

I am not a professional or experienced photographer. So consider these comments. I have two Canon cameras, 40D and 60D. I have two other Canon IS USM lenses: 17-55 f2.8 and 70-300 f4-f5.6. I bought this lens to bridge the gap between them. I haven't had this new lens for a very long time, but here are my first impressions. First, it's shorter (when zoomed out), lighter, and smaller in diameter than the 17-55 f2.8 lens that used to be our typical carry-on lens. Obviously it doesn't perform as well in low light as the f2.8 lens, but that's to be expected. But it takes very good pictures and doesn't feel too restricted by the smaller aperture. Colors seem accurate and image stabilization works very well. The tube does not rotate when zooming or focusing, so filters with fixed orientation can be used. This is not the case with my 70-300mm zoom. The lens rotates when focusing. While it doesn't really matter to me, it might be more of a concern to others. My only complaint with this lens is that it pops out under its own weight when the camera is pointed down, unlike my other two Canon IS USM zoom lenses. And there's no lock (again, unlike my other two lenses) to keep it at the shortest possible length during transport. It annoys me when I carry a camera. Compare images taken with this lens to images taken with my 70-300 lens (at 70 and 135. The two longest lengths common to both lenses). This lens seemed to be a bit brighter. colors and wide DOF. Given the shorter lens and slightly larger aperture, the depth of field was to be expected I think. I think the lighter colors could be explained in the same way, although the difference was very small. Both lenses delivered very good results in my opinion. My lens was a white box lens which was not mentioned in the product description. I was half expecting this considering the price I paid was low. Even lower than the current top price listed on Revain for that item. But I would like the description of the item to make this clear in advance. The lens was wrapped in a single layer of bubble wrap in a plain white cardboard box. This in turn was sent in a slightly larger box and stuffed with wrapping paper. No documentation or software was included (except for the warranty card that accompanied the WAS), as is the case with a lens sold in retail packaging. So remember that this is the case. However, my lens arrived quickly and intact. My order was fulfilled by ALLTIMEDEALS.
