The remote control function drains the battery whether the lights are on or not

I first bought a pack of tea lights without the remote to test out this winter's power outages. They worked well, but it was a hassle to turn them on manually. I bought 2 packs of remote controlled lights and my wife was given decorative tea coasters for us to display each day. The remote worked great at first. Point in the general direction, click, and as if by magic, the lights blinked. Fast forward well past the 100 hour battery life and I found that the lights are draining their battery whether they are lit or not. To use the remote control to turn on the light, it must be switched to the "on" position. Do you see a problem? Every light was dead, although none had been used since the first test. The reasonable solution to this problem would be to leave the light in the off position until ready to use. Then the question arises, why do you need a remote control? They are useless compared to the traditional version and will only disappoint you.
