They are definitely large as the name/description suggests. Works well for my purposes (I got them for crafting to make decorative pieces for my hair and also for some friends/family so for me it's a 4+ inch "canvas" to work with) , others may find 4+ length in inches is too big for their head, if you only use this to hold hair in place, it's difficult to twist and position. If you use this to dress up your already pinned hair, it's amazing. Some of the combs had some rough edges, I tried smoothing them out/making sure they were closed so our hair wouldn't get caught in them. However, this is a quality control issue and it is impossible to guess on how many ridges this is happening. and again, for me, since I cover them with deco, a minimal problem. When I inserted one into my hair with no embellishments, I found a way to tuck it neatly/safely, and only to the very top. less than half an inch was visible and it was clear/white (maybe matte white is a good way to describe it) which was a lot less visible than I expected.
