They are cute but the board material is soft. In fact, there is no need to drill pilot holes before assembly. The holes on the metal spacers are welded or can be welded in such a way that assembly can be awkward when a plate is required from above and spacers from below. And the screws for it are short, in this case an additional measure of security can be chosen. I used superglue gel in the hole, then screwed the spacers to the board and where the spacer wasn't flush with the wood I added glue there too. Once the shelves are installed they look pretty cute. I would recommend using drywall anchors for the end of each shelf that doesn't line up with the post and all 3 don't match post to post. So far I've got about 4+lbs on one shelf and 6+lbs on the longer one. I also added hooks at the bottom for more use. Overall I think they are worth the price.
