Beautiful cutlery set! It's incredibly light, strong and elegant :^) There were a lot of comments about the straw and the shards in it, and yes there were shards, but I just wrapped sandpaper around a small dowel and poked it through the straw a bit, and now it is perfect ! :^D Some people asked if there was a coating and some people said it was varnish. There is no lacquer finish on the cutlery though, it is a bit of pickling oil used to seal natural wood and prevent bacterial growth and the like. Walnut, tung, grapeseed, and hemp oils are some of the most commonly used oils. So if you want to know what they use specifically email the seller. In general, do not use washing-up liquid or washing-up liquid, as these chemicals can be absorbed by the wood. So I do a base scrub with hot water and salt and if possible let them dry somewhere where the sun will hit them as UV rays kill bacteria. If you take good care of this set, it will serve you well :^D
