A cool gadget to have on the go, but cleaning is difficult, especially if you want to use it outside.

The idea of going into the wild and then drinking fresh espresso in a completely unknown place sounds great. Making your own fresh, perfect espresso in a crappy hotel that only serves disgusting coffee sounds pretty sweet, too. And this little gadget is fun. All you need besides espresso is a way to boil water. Therefore, any outdoor stove will do, and you can usually get hot water at any hotel that has tea. The actual process of making espresso is not very complicated. You pour hot water into a small tank, then run it through the machine, pumping it about a dozen times to heat the inside. Then repeat the process with the addition of espresso. The whole process takes less than 5 minutes and is not at all difficult to master. It's a little uncomfortable, but not too much. They only pump slowly until the water is used up. There's even a small cup built in for you to sip espresso from. It's all quite inventive, and it's all beautifully done. I've just used an illy espresso in a silver can, and the espresso this thing makes with this coffee is pretty good, to be honest. Even after preheating the car, you should drink it right away as it won't be exactly hot when it comes out. I found it very smooth and very similar to what my regular home machine can do with the same coffee. Well, here's the big caveat. If you're at home or somewhere with a sink, after you've enjoyed your espresso, the next step is to go to the sink, take everything apart, rinse everything, and then place all the pieces on a dish rack to dry. Keep in mind that there are many parts and some of them are quite small: water tank, pump section, coffee stand, filter/dispenser steel end, mug and measuring cup. But under running water it only takes a minute to rinse everything off and spread dry. So cleaning your house isn't much worse than cleaning your regular espresso machine. Basically you only have to be careful with small pieces. But nobody buys it to make espresso at home, it's for on the go. How will you easily clean all these items when you are backpacking or hiking? Or even in a hotel room if you are leaving in half an hour? The answer is that you really can't. You'll have to pack it up dirty, or at least a little damp inside, and wait until you're somewhere where you can properly clean it and let all the little parts dry. I suppose you could wash every little detail and then hand dry, but now you run into a level of hassle that I'm not sure most people really want to deal with. And the design makes it easy to hand dry the pieces, even if you want to. Now I'm still a fan of the thing because it does what it says on the tin and does it well. It's still carried on trips across civilization, but I don't care even for autocamping, and I find it too impractical for hiking, even if one were inclined to lug something that heavy into remote areas.
