Review on Basement Watchdog BWC1 Switch Controller by Khalil Hopp

Revainrating 3 out of 5

The 1st block proved unreliable after 20 months.

Failed as others pointed out after 20 months. First peeled off, then glued. Luckily I caught him before he burned the pump. I'll do a teardown to see why. I will post an update if there is a design flaw or poorly chosen component that fails and is easily repaired. I had high hopes that it would last much longer than a mechanical switch. updated 11/21/14. After monitoring at home, it got stuck again. I tapped the float cage and it went out. There was a bit of limescale on the plastic but I wouldn't think it was enough to get the float stuck. So I took a jar of rocks (short and wide), poured in about 4 ounces of cleaning vinegar (Walmart) and put the float in for about 4 days, stirring (raising and lowering) from time to time. The lime has dissolved and it seems to be working fine again. Depending on how hard your sump water is, this may need to be done annually to prevent calcification. I'm changing my rating from 1 to 4 because it actually still works. It just needs regular maintenance. I looked at the electronics and it has kickback protection via a relay (due to the lack of the sump switches, they fail). 1-7-15 update. The block failed again. I contacted the manufacturer and they replaced the device as I still had two years of warranty left. I am changing the rating to 3. I hope the replacement will last longer. Updated 2/23/18. This replacement device lasts 3 years without problems. Knock on wood.
