Nice design, a definite improvement over the standard moka pot

Alessi is a definite improvement over the standard moka pot in several ways. First and foremost, coffee is better. I read about it in reviews but was a bit skeptical until I tried it. It produces a rich, full-bodied cup of demitasse power without the burnt notes I always got from my old moka. Also, unlike the Mok, it constantly uses up all the water in the base, while the Mok's pot starts to splash and gurgle after using only half the water. The thick plate at the bottom of the pot seems to distribute the heat well, even on an electric stove. Second, the build quality is impressive. I've had several Moka pots of various sizes over the years and they seemed, for lack of a better word, cheap. The aluminum felt flimsy and the parts came together randomly. In contrast, Alessi appears to be designed and built to much stricter specifications. The aluminum feels heavier and the parts fit together well. The top lid opens and closes smoothly, doesn't wobble or rattle. Third, but sort of a continuation of the above, Alessi is wonderful. Both aesthetic and functional design elements are outstanding. It looks great on a shelf, its clean, flowing lines (probably CNC machined) up close becoming gentle curves when viewed from a few feet away. The only real design flaw is the handle. It's somewhat small and awkwardly shaped, making it difficult to cast without touching the hot metal with your fingers. I usually use a towel or oven mitt when pouring straight from the stove. Even if you're not familiar with moka coffee machines, this machine doesn't make espresso. Coffee from Alessi will never be like espresso from your favorite coffee shop. However, it produces a stronger brew with more consistency than a filter coffee maker and is suitable for a demitasse portion. It's called a 3-cup coffee maker, but I get just over two cups of espresso per brew. To attempt. It's a big improvement over Moka and will look great on the shelf even when you're not using it.
