Review on 2 oz Speedball Metal Leaf Adhesive for Mona Lisa Painting by Abdullah Huan

The right tool for the job. (But it stays sticky about forever.)

If you're a clumsy guy like me, get ready to spend the rest of your life looking for glue stains on things. --- It never dries out to the point where it loses its stickiness. They will be sticky until the end of time. That being said, I was only recently a 1st timer in gold and silver foil, so I was admittedly clumsy through the entire DIY project. (Note: I don't know why they have to be complicated and call it "glue" instead of glue, but that only adds to the confusion for beginners. Bottom line: it's glue.) The glue is very thin. and watery, which is good because initially I was concerned about how to make sure the gold leaf didn't have any glue residue underneath. But it didn't show up. However, if you try to apply it too quickly or too forcefully, the glue will foam up in tiny bubbles and you don't want them trapped under the gold leaf. You need a good brush that lets you control how much liquid you pick up (ie don't rely on getting away on every surface with a foam brush) or liquid liquid will spread everywhere and form puddles. This 2 ounce jar doesn't look like much but will last about forever, you only need the thinnest layer. Could you use Mod Podge, spray glue or other sticky materials? Of course. But the essence of this material is that it dries for a long time, so you have enough time to work with the sheet, which is inconvenient for the user. If this is your first time trying this, keep it simple: use this glue and make sure you get a "plain sheet" of wax paper. It's wax paper that keeps you from going crazy and throwing your project out the window. ----Updated July 2017----While I don't have any specific pictures of the glue, I just wanted to post a few final pictures of the gold leaf in action. You can see that I covered the agate slice with gold leaf (using a narrow glue brush) and then gilded the inside of the box (using a large flat glue brush). It doesn't cause much of a problem, but I'd like to point out that it was a nightmare with a can of glue and used brushes. Although it's advertised as "water-based" and "washable with soap and water," and I washed my brushes right away and wiped the lid of the jar with a paper towel, the adhesive never really comes off. No matter how many times they've been washed, the brushes still remain sticky and hard. The jar itself closes, and the only way to remove the lid was to pinch the rim with a pair of tongs. Obviously I'm doing something wrong because it's a huge thorn in the butt.
