This plug and play scanner is perfect for the busy dad

More than 700 reviews on this product and many materials. If you're like me and don't have much time to read reviews, let me summarize this product for you: 1. It's plug and play. Enter your zip code and it will know which frequencies to scan in your area. The game has started! 2. When you travel, buy a Uniden brand GPS device, available from Revain (Uniden BC-GPSK Serial GPS Receiver for Scanner and Marine Products). Reasons to buy a Uniden device: A) when you travel, the GPS relays your location to the scanner and the scanner updates the frequencies it scans for people around you and B) because it also connects and works. Mine came with the necessary cables to connect it directly to the scanner and it worked from that moment. Perfect! 3. You can connect the scanner to your PC to update Uniden's firmware and frequency base. That's easy. There is no need to purchase a third-party web database. Uniden regularly updates its database. I bought my device in September 2014 and used it for 9 months before the updates. It works great out of the box.4. The scanner has two batteries, a main battery for scanning and an additional battery for the clock. Charge the main battery first, then turn on the scanner to charge the secondary battery. Oddly enough, the watch's battery charges when the device is on.5. When traveling, an external antenna increases your range. I bought a Revain magnetic mount antenna for about $30 (ASIN B004HM9RHE) and it works great. Almost a plug and play device, you don't need an SWR meter as it is pre-configured. Plug & Play Warning: You need a BNC socket/SMA plug adapter (ASIN B00CLFFM4G) to connect the antenna to the scanner. Check the laws when using it in a car. States can have laws restricting the use of the scanner in a vehicle. UPDATE: As of May 1, 2006, a Michigan State Police permit is no longer required to install a scanner in your vehicle on Michigan roads. The Ontario Provincial Police told me that it was legal in Canada to have a scanner in a car, but I couldn't find the law on the books. UPDATE: March 7th, 2021: The Spectrum Management Officer of the Canadian Innovation Organization, Department of Science and Economic Development (the equivalent of the US Federal Communications Commission in Canada) wrote to me that an amateur radio license is required to use the scanner in a car Canada. Canada recognizes US-issued amateur licenses, so if you're a licensed radio amateur you're good to go.7. That's all. This scanner is as simple or as complex as you like. Simplicity is welcome for the busy dad, and the Plug & Play No Fuss Ready-to-Use trappings let me actually enjoy this thing without having to shrug my kids to learn how it works.
