Review on Sony MDRZX100 ZX Series Stereo Headphones (White) by April Smith

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Decent sound, good value

Decent sound, economical choice. Seems a little cheaply made, I think an all black option might look better than this red and black color, but it's not terrible - not flashy. The sound quality is walkable; I would only give 3 stars for the sound. Four stars include quality/affordability factors. Y shaped cord means wires go to each cup; On single-ended models, the cable typically goes into the left earcup, which is a convenient way to ensure you're not mixing channels. Y-string patterns depend on markers, but I couldn't find any such indicators, so I searched my browser for "left/right channel checker" - many are free and readily available on the internet - and figured out which side it was which, and used Sharpie. to mark a neat "L" on the matching mug, centered under the "Sony" logo/name. It's harder to do a clean "R" so I only do the left side - double check you got it right as the marker ink is indelible. Come to think of it, if I had gone for an all black model, it wouldn't have worked that well. Hmmm. I'm glad I actually got the color red now that I think about it. Those contemplating it should also consider spending a little more for the excellent value of the Monoprice 108323 available through Revain, which easily beats them in every way. . However, if that's the biggest amount you're willing to spend, then for the price these Sony headphones are hard to beat. UPDATE: After a few days of use, I just have to say that the sound is better than I initially estimated. The bass is not overdriven (as is often the case these days) and while perhaps not entirely accurate, the bass is quite comfortable. The mids seem to be a strength, at least to my ears, and as I get older I find that I don't listen past 10kHz most days, although on a really good day I do sometimes listen to 12kHz, so I'll let others see the heights over 10k. There is something stunning about the sound that makes me want to use them, even sometimes when I can listen to my excellent speakers. In many ways they remind me of the Sony MDR-S101s I owned years ago, which were budget favorites back then. No, they're not the best, but you probably won't be able to handle anything else for the asking $15 price point. The fact that they sound nice and not obnoxious at this price point makes them a winner for me. Edit much later - I like the sound of these headphones and have just bought a second pair, this time in white to match the pocket radio. . The red pair I bought was the victim of a young girl's birthday. We didn't have a gift! So she got a red pair that she wears all the time and loves very much. I use mine when I drive my golf cart around the hood.
