Review on ๐ŸŽง Sony Fontopia MDR-EX51LP Headphones - Discontinued by Manufacturer (SEO-optimized) by Lisa Hall

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good sound but very cheap build

Addendum to my original review (below): If I could change my review I would give these headphones 3 stars instead of 4. They're comfortable, sound great, and are inexpensive, but they're also extremely cheap in construction, which certainly makes one wonder if they're worth the price, even at their low price point. Within a month or two, the screens began cracking/tearing on the wires next to the headphones, exposing a bare wire. They still work and sound very good, but how long before they fall apart completely? However, I'll probably buy another pair when they do, and this time I'll try to be *extremely* gentle with them - if this future pair also fails too soon, I'll give them up for good. Original Review: Based on the descriptions of these types of headphones here and elsewhere, I expected them to block out most if not all external noise. As for me, I can still hear outside noise quite well when wearing it. It blocks the sound to a degree, but it's not the same as wearing earbuds, which is what I expected. I tried all three sizes and the medium size gave me decent sound while the others didn't. I think I'm wearing them right. They are comfortable enough. To my ears, the sound quality, while very clear, is generally not as comfortable as the inexpensive Koss clip-on over-ear headphones I have (which have been well-reviewed - I'd give you the model number, but they are it not ). where to find them!) The Sony earbuds are very crisp, but sound a bit harsh (treble too high) and the bass isn't as strong, although the latter might not be bad (the Koss has a bit too much bass.) Nonetheless, the Sound quality definitely better than dead sounding Apple iPod phones and they stay up much better, plus you don't have to play them as loud to cancel out outside noise which can be a bit easier on your ears (although, again, they don't block as much external noises, as I expected). I think these phones are very good for sports if you keep the cord under control. For other situations I would prefer Koss phones. Unlike some others here, I really like the uneven design of the cable - the length from the right earbud is longer than the left, the aim is for you to route the cable right through your neck and then down. I think that keeps the cable out of the way.

Pros
  • Ultra light in-ear headphones
Cons
  • Hard to remember but it was
