How I use it: Background: I sometimes make videos with my iPhone while taking photos with my DSLR. I usually hold my iPhone under or over the lens when taking photos. I needed a flexible, inexpensive system that would allow me to mount an iPhone or other small video device on my camera's hot shoe. I started with the Camkix hot shoe adapter kit - attach your phone or GoPro Hero to your DSLR's flash mount. - Record your photo shoot or use your phone apps to light, monitor or control for $10.98 on Amazon. I chose this 1/4" overFotasy SCX2 20 Tripod Adapter with Hot Shoe Screw with Premier Cleaning Cloth (Black) for $5.69 from Amazon because I also wanted a tilt adjustable mount holder and $10.98 was a good price for a combo The benefit of the tilt connector is that I can align my camera and phone so they are in the center of the same object. Both parts are metal. There are no instructions but it's pretty intuitive once you get used to it are designed to work with tripod mounts. The hot shoe is 18 x 18mm, allowing it to rotate in the camera's 19mm wide hot shoe. Simply tighten the nut to prevent movement. Don't expect this inexpensive system to be reliable The torque from the weight of the iPhone/tablet will loosen the connections when shooting unless you use Loctite. On a tripod, the R everything is fine, but check the connections from time to time. The phone holder included with the Camkix hot shoe adapter is made of spring-loaded plastic. Stretched to the limit, you can use quite a bit of force with two hands, but it will hold the slim iPhone 7 Plus. The best method for installing and removing the phone from the mount is to detach the phone holder from the tilt mount and work on a flat surface to avoid dropping the phone. I spread the orthosis wide with both hands and carefully insert the thin body 7 plus into the orthosis. This is a tight fit. This mount works best for phones 2.25"-2.5" wide and ΒΌ" thick (5.5-6.5cm width x 0.5cm thickness). hits my forehead when positioned with the phone's display facing me. No problem for a front-facing GoPro. I decided I wanted to use alternative mounts with the Camkix hot shoe accessory. I think the best mount to mount 7 Plus over Camkix Hot Shoe Adapter Kit is Ailun Phone Holder Phone Tripod Mount Adapter Compact Universal for iPhone 7/6/6s/6/6s/7 Plus/SE/ 5s/5/5c, Samsung Galaxy S8/S7/S7 Edge, S6/S6 Edge, Note 5/4/3 and Other Cell Phones [Black] Although it's also all plastic, it uses a screw mechanism to fit 7 big phones jam. It's much easier to use than the CamKix mount and holds my phone securely. It fits a device 2.25"-3.5" wide and 3/8" thick (6-7cm wide x 1cm thick). I can direct the whole Ailun phone mount mount on the hot shoe on a tripod screw or take the ailun phone mount and mount it on the camkix tilt or I can mount the entire ailun unit on a camkix tilt unit Greater flexibility in terms of offsetting the phone from the viewfinder plane Easier to use than the spring loaded plastic phone holder that came with the Camkix I also use an Ulanzi iPad tripod adapter iPhone or mini tablets to my DSLR's hot shoe I can hold the tablet in the Ulanzi mount but the heavier the tablet is on the hot shoe, the more unstable the mount will be, especially if it's done by hand.Ulanzi is also entirely plastic, but can be adjusted to accommodate phones, mini-tablets and full-size tablets.Le not adjustable. There are two locations for ΒΌβ-20 threaded bolts β one at the bottom and a pivoting adjustable mount behind the clamp. The rotating part has click stops but wobbles a bit, making it a little less useful. I use this to hold my iPhone and tablet high over a telephoto lens so the telephoto lens isn't visible in a video clip. I also mount it on quick release plates and then mount it on a ball head on a tripod to easily adjust the position of the plates. Basically, I am satisfied with all three devices. They give me the ability to decide which setup will best hold my iPhone, mini-tablet, Go Pro on my DSLR's hot shoe, no matter what imaging setup I'm using. Cheap compared to spending a lot more for really decent $80 aluminum clamps and $50 Manfrotto clamps that only have ΒΌ-inch-20 tripod screws with no hot shoe 1/4-inch-20 screw and tilt adapters of the devices. Shoes at your own risk. SLR hot shoes are designed for small flashes, not bulky devices like iPhones and iPads.
