Our Australian Shepherd/Rottweiler mutt started scratching and licking his flanks and back a few years ago. We called our vet clinic first and they suggested adding a tablespoon of corn oil to our food daily. The corn oil helped her dry skin, but she kept scratching and licking it, causing hot spots. We went to the vet. They prescribed Apoquil, an expensive anti-allergy pill ($2.50 a day). The pills worked but made her nervous. Once the hot spots had healed, we stopped the apocquil. After about a year, the scratching, licking, and hot spots returned. She started taking a stronger dose of Apokvil, which didn't help. The vet administered a steroid injection and steroid tablets. Unfortunately, our girl couldn't take it and had a severe seizure that required a trip to an animal hospital sixty miles away. After $600 we knew steroids and Apoquel were no longer suitable. I've searched many pet websites for solutions and found many whose dogs responded well to triglyceride supplements. The Vetoquinol brand had many four and five star reviews on Revain and Chewy, so I ordered the capsules. After a week of daily use, the dog began to itch very slightly and stopped licking constantly. Unfortunately she didn't like the big capsules and we had to start pricking them open and squeezing the stinky liquid onto her food. She ate it with no problem so I bought the pump when it came time to order again. Much easier. We use two syringes for her dinner every day. Their skin isn't dry, they don't bite or lick themselves constantly, and their fur is smooth and shiny. I can highly recommend Vetohinol.
