Listening to audio books on a tractor and mower, working in a shop. Cassettes and CDs were getting a little awkward to use, so I decided to give this MP3 thing a try. This is my first MP3 player so I bought an inexpensive RCA brand to see how they work. Wow, this little device is definitely superior to tape recorders and CD players and can hold multiple books at the same time. I didn't like the software that was on it, but I don't need it. Just plug it into a USB port and drag and drop your MP3 catalogs onto it. First I deleted everything on it. The tracks seem to be organized more by MP3 ID3 information than physical folder and file names, so you need to make sure your ID3 track information is correct in the MP3 files before uploading them. There are several free ID3 editors for your PC that you can use to check/edit the ID3 information of your MP3 files. This is important as it allows all MP3 files (called tracks) to be stored in the correct order in the correct book (called albums). I initially had trouble getting the little red player to respond to character clicks on the small screen. I thought it was broken until I finally figured out that you just touch the character with your fingertip without pressing on it. No problem with a little practice. I like the fact that it remembers and restarts exactly where you were when you cycled the device so you don't remember the track and like an old CD player at the beginning of the track have to start. It's not rechargeable but uses a AAA battery, which turned out to be an advantage as I can swap out the battery for an extra one in the field. The battery lasts two to three long working days. The headphones that came with the kit were not very comfortable, so I bought softer and higher quality headphones cheaper. I put the earbuds on my ear backwards (pointing up) and then put on regular earmuffs. So you can hear very well even at low volume. All in all, this little device has survived many days in a dusty and dirty environment (in my bag), being dropped and bumped a few times. I've ripped the cords out of several headphones by holding on to a dangling cord for something, but the player still works great. The only difficulty I have is seeing the small screen and using the buttons without reading glasses, but I guess that's just my age and not the product.
