I read a few reviews before buying. I'm wearing one 38" waist and it's tight but a 40" waist can loosen quickly. I bought XXL and swim in it. I can wear it but have to pull the strings to tighten it. Mesh liner is too big I think I would be better off with XL If you use them for casual shorts and someone who is used to that baggy look or you belong to a generation where you wear this type of shorts and a versatile baggy -Expect shorts, take a size up and you will likely want to cut/tear If you intend to use them for training in the main court or yard, normal size should fit.
