USB cables don't last forever and since I'm working on a car trip I plug and unplug my phone from the car more than 20 times a day to connect to Android Auto traveling different places, my previous one foot USB charging cable wore out after a few weeks of use. Why has Android Auto lost contact with my phone for two days? Hopefully it's a cable and not my machine's USB input. Success! I don't know how long they will last but I bought three and have a spare in the car just in case.
