I had this product about a week ago and also the DS lite to compare. Build Quality: The plastic it's made of looks a little cheaper. I've only used DS lite before, which I felt was more durable. The keys just don't feel as crisp, and the volume and 3D sliders dangle and are easy to press and accidentally change. Also, the hinge seems a bit loose when opening the screen. Gameplay: The 3DS is basically the same size as the DS lite. For those with normal sized adult hands, playing a game that requires you to be fast can be challenging with the smaller size. The buttons are quite close together, which sometimes makes it difficult to press the button you want. The added analogue joystick function is very nice and pleasant. The home button was a handy feature to pause the game and check a message or change the brightness without leaving the game. It definitely helps when you're not at a save point. Download Play: This was something that was present on previous versions of the DS but I still have to say it's an amazing feature, sometimes it only takes 1 cartridge to play. The downside to playing with 1 cassette tray is that the features are usually limited. Additional features are available to both players who own the game. 3D: I'm very impressed with 3D without glasses. I thought I saw an earlier version of this and wasn't impressed. What makes it good is that you can adjust the viewing distance as well as a 3D slider that other 3D apps don't have. Nintendo has done a great job here. But with this I can only play it for about an hour before I get tired and possibly get a headache. The best part is that you can turn 3D off completely and not even realize it's any different from a regular screen. A plus or minus (depending on how you look at it) is that with 3D enabled you have to look directly at the screen. Otherwise you will either not see 3D or the entire screen will be blurry. It should also be noted that 3D is not intended for children under the age of 7, as Nintendo warns. This can permanently damage their vision. Camera (3D): The quality of the camera reminds me of cell phones when they first had cameras. The quality is poor and I would never consider using it. I've always used my iPhone's camera over it. Photos/videos shot in 3D are much harder to see and don't get better if you adjust the viewing distance and 3D slider. I think it would be better if the two cameras were placed further apart, close to the average distance between human eyes. Battery: The battery should last about 3-8 hours. That's a pretty big gap. I've found it takes around 4-5 hours depending on what I'm doing. In sleep mode, the battery drains surprisingly quickly, about 3 days (or maybe I have a broken 3DS). The good thing is that there are many options. Batteries or USB chargers can be used to extend playtime. Game Selection: One of the components of the gaming system are of course games. 3DS has been around for a few years and there really are few good games worth playing. New Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart 7, Luigi's Mansion and many more. Let's hope more notable games come out before the next DS system comes out. Conclusion: Overall the 3DS is a very accessible and fun system, easy to use for kids but packed with loads of games that adults will enjoy. I highly recommend this system for people on a budget or with children, to keep them (or yourself) occupied on a long flight or car ride. Easy to use for kids but packed with games adults will love.
