As a previous Swann user (satisfied with the unit) I upgraded my old DVR to this one. I just use a basic watch to see if anything happened instead of actively getting alerts and notifications. What I've found with the 4580 is that there seem to be software/hardware issues that are causing my cameras to detect issues and most problematically not pre-record. In other words, when an event occurs, most DVRs allow you to watch at least 30 seconds before the camera alarms so you can see the entire event. My system won't do this and so I can only see people exiting the frame, not see them entering and exiting. I also did a lot of tests and noticed that some cameras don't respond at all at night. Conditions during the spring were North Florida so it wasn't hot or cold as I know some things can be affected. There is no pattern of failure. They are completely random. Numerous tech support calls were unsuccessful, so Swann replaced my unit with an 8-channel version. After much research I've heard that this is a standard response from Swann to problems I've encountered, so this leads me to believe that this model, or at least the iteration I bought, is buggy and a lemon. Due to the extended exchange guarantee I only give 2 stars. Let's see if that solved the problem.
