It is not uncommon for a bookshelf or shelving unit to be placed in front of electrical outlets. These extensions provide access to outlets without having to rip open the wall to move the outlet box. In my case, I placed a large bookshelf in front of several outlets and blocked them. I cut holes in the backs of the bookshelves to match the outlets. Once the bookshelves are installed, these box extensions are inserted and secured with the long mounting screws included in the extension kit. The socket is then connected to an extension cord instead of to the wall socket as before. These extensions are a unique and inexpensive solution to a complex problem. Before cutting holes in cabinets or shelves, check the dimensions of the old outlet. Electrical boxes have dimensions that vary somewhat from manufacturer to manufacturer. Extensions will fit most, but some wall boxes may be too small for the extension (which is wedge-shaped) to fit all the way in. You'll have to get an extension cord first before you know for sure.
