Use as directed and use distilled water. As you can see in the photo, the white cable is almost completely gray after a few days of use. There is some tangle around it on the shelf and other items, but not as much as on the block and string. The device itself has gray spots around the top of the screw. It's fun, but definitely not easy. The device does what it needs to do, adding about 10-15% humidity to a 10x10 room. But it's dirty.
