I tried many different products but they didn't work. This product works when used as directed. I've used it successfully on carpet, hardwood and concrete floors. This product must penetrate wooden or concrete floors under carpets or rugs, otherwise the odor will remain faint after drying. If a human can smell residual urine, then an animal definitely can. I cannot stress enough that I can be generous when using this product. The earlier it is used, the better for new stains. After treatment, our cats did not return and did not repeat the markings in those places. If you are a professional carpet cleaner I would recommend using this product as directed for stubborn stains and waiting a few months for all surfaces under the carpet to dry completely before cleaning the carpet. Advice to pet owners: I would never use a rental carpet cleaner in a home where your pets live. You risk bringing the smell of other pets into your home, which can result in your pet being "tagged"! Cats and dogs have an extreme sense of smell, and no scented soap will mask an animal's urine enough to prevent your pets from smelling it. I would give 5 stars if it was a little cheaper and more economical for cleaning large areas.
