This pillow definitely works as it should. I recently had a laminectomy on C5, 6 and 7 and this is the only pillow I can sleep on. It feels like he's holding my neck straight. This doesn't work very well on a very soft mattress as your body weight will push through the mattress and the pillow will remain too high. This does not happen with a firm or reasonably firm mattress. I had to use a flatter, softer pillow under my shoulders when lying on a very soft mattress. I've had the pillow for two months now and take it with me when I travel. I use it over and over again and find that when my neck hurts I lie on it for ten minutes and it seems to ease the pain and my neck feels rested. It smells when you first unpack it, but the smell went away after a day or two.
