My husband has very sensitive feet due to heavy loads in childhood. He and I are big hikers, but we had trouble hiking in the New Mexico winter because the snow was about a foot deep in the mountains. We bought him waterproof boots for $200 to stop this, but when the snow was a foot deep it didn't help. Waterproof gaiters proved only marginally more useful. As every hiker knows, trail runners are by far the most comfortable hiking shoes.
