Lately I've been trying various nootropics as a possible solution to the chronic mild depression and anxiety I've lived with for most of my life. I also tend to get very distracted by my own thoughts - I don't appear to have ADD or ADHD as I have tested negative repeatedly since my first visit to a psychiatrist aged 11. It's just that my train of thought is "cluttered" and tangential when I need to focus on a task, but I can work very efficiently if I focus on it and really focus on it. as a psychiatrist's assistant and seeing firsthand the damage prescription antidepressants can do, and the absolutely insane drug culture these doctors participate in (free golf vacation if you order more Xanax! We order lunch from the office staff, too!), I lasted years and absolutely refused to take anything for my depression. There's nothing quite like seeing a doctor prescribing Adderall to a four-year-old who is "fidgeting in his preschool class" to keep you away from psychiatrists. I've tried St. John's Wort before with zero results, so I basically gave up. I recently ordered L-Theanine + Caffeine after doing some research and reading all the rave reviews online. BIG MISTAKE. I took one in the morning and hallucinated all day! No serious, travel-like visions or anything like that, but visual static, oddly colored afterimages and swirling patterns. It was crazy! I was also feeling a little drunk and out of control. I've never taken LSD or anything like that, so I really don't have anything to compare it to. The only other time I've had anything like this was with Ambien - the first night I took it for insomnia was awful. These hallucinations were serious, full-blown nightmares that distorted reality. Needless to say I never took it again. Instead, I now use valerian, which works wonders. In any case, this True Focus was the first thing I took that had a positive effect on my mental state. I do believe that the chemistry and function of the brain is very individual and varies greatly. Some have problems with dopamine reuptake, others with serotonin. The antidepressants your doctor prescribes deal only with serotonin โ these same people are most likely to benefit from L-theanine and catecholamines. I think I'm one of the few that should improve dopamine function instead. True Focus is great for this. If you're trying conventional/popular nootropics that work for others but cause side effects for you, try this and maybe L-Dopa. L-Dopa seems to make me too dizzy and energetic when I take it, so I just keep my dose at two True Focus each morning. It may help people with more severe depression or mood swings, it's too much for me. Give it a try if other products don't work for you. You may have different brain chemistry than most! UPDATE: I have found that they work AMAZINGLY well when taken with black (regular) coffee. I suspect that an ingredient in True Focus boosts the caffeine in the coffee, although I haven't tried them with a direct caffeine additive, so I can't be sure. Just a suggestion to try if you want an extra boost of energy in the morning.
